It seems a bunch of Dutch scientists have managed to create pork meat from a petri dish.
This means that meat can one day be potentially "vegetarian" as it is not obtained from slaughter.
To me the easiest problem to solve are the scientific ones; it's the theological ones that are the deal breakers.

the ruling is quite straightforward here though
its based off / derived from pig blood .. thus straightforward non-kosher
it would be a debatable case if some scientist able to make artificial meat, with consistency of real pork, and taste exactly like pork ... but does not have anything that comes from pigs anywhere in its compound ..
"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." [Deuteronomy 14:8]
"Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, what has been hallowed to other than God, the beast strangled; the beast beaten down, the beast fallen to death, the beast gored, and that devoured by beasts of prey - excepting that you have sacrificed duly -- as also things sacrificed to idols, and partition by the divining arrows; that is ungodliness." [Quran : Al-Maeda (The Table) 5:3]
Theology be damned. If it helps to stop starvation and is beneficial to humanity, people need to kindly remove their heads from their rectums and get on board. Otherwise, they're being selfish as hell, considering they aren't in that situation and don't know what its like to worry about things like when the next meal will take place.
Great post. I'm totally stealing that quote about scientific problems vs theological ones.

@Kage it's just a first step. They might perfect the technique of not using any blood from the pig. After all if it is vegetarian i.e. not derived from animal protein it should be halal as well.
@Joel, for some, religion is integral to their existence and though I am not a religious person I will respect their rights to do whatever they want as long they do not force their views on others.
